Things to Do in Whangarei

Whangarei Falls is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the Whangarei area. There’s a beautiful walk down to this waterfall, and it makes a lovely picnic spot.

Whangarei Quarry Gardens is another tranquil nature spot within easy access of the city centre. The subtropical gardens were created by volunteers and include forest walks, streams, waterfalls, sculptures, and a camellia grove. There’s also a nice café where you can enjoy morning tea or lunch. Entry is by gold coin donation.

Whangarei Town Basin is pleasant to explore with its numerous shops, restaurants, and cafes, and the Hatea Loop Walkway is a picturesque riverside stroll that starts from the Town Basin marina and continues along an art trail featuring marine-themed sculptures.

The city is also home to a thriving community of artists and creative, and it’s well worth taking the time to explore some of Whangarei’s art galleries and craft shops.

The Whangarei area also boasts some stunning beaches where you can swim, surf, or just enjoy a leisurely coastal walk. Matapouri Bay, a 40-minute drive northeast of the city has the white sands and turquoise waters of holiday brochures. If you want to feel like you’re on your own desert island, head to one of Whangarei’s best-kept secrets: Smugglers Cove on the north side of Whangarei Harbour.

If you’re interested in the wildlife and history of Northland, make sure you take the time to visit Kiwi North Whangarei Museum and Heritage Park. The onsite museum, housed in historical buildings, features collections of early Maori artefacts, and photographs showing life in the area in the early 1900s. There’s also the opportunity to see Kiwis (the species of bird, this time) in their native habitat.

The Northland area and Whangarei city both feature a sub-tropical climate, with the warmest summers in New Zealand. Average daytime temperatures from December to February range 22°C to 30°C, dropping to a mild 12°C to 17°C in the winter months.

There are approximately 2,000 hours of sunshine each year, making it easy to enjoy Whangarei’s great outdoors. However, rain is also common and cyclones can make landfall, especially in the summer months, so it makes sense to pack for all weathers.
